Michael Reinboth is a man on a mission and a real life jack-of-all-trades. He is the founder and owner of the hugely successful Compost and Compost-Jazzanova-Records (JCR) labels but his achievements don’t stop there. He is also a highly respected music journalist, author, music manager and DJ. Michael has been playing his trade since the late 1970s and it was in the early 80s, at the tender age of 20, that he made his first appearance as a DJ in “Basement”, a club in his hometown Hannover. Here Micheal had free reign to experiment with music, playing “a wild mix of what (he) really liked.” Michael never looked back, since then he’s played gigs all over the world, created and nurtured labels, club nights and acts. He’s a firm believer in diversity stating, “I’m a full spectrum DJ. My favourite DJs are still those who play deep shit, just the best tunes, old and new, entertaining the crowd as well as giving respect to the originators. It’s not the mix that counts, it’s the mixture!”
Back in 1993 a serendipitous encounter saw Michael meet Rainer Trüby. Rainer, a music aficionado just like Michael, gave Michael a demo-tape with two tracks recorded by Bernd Kunz and himself, later known as A Forest Mighty Black. Michael, seeing an opportunity decided to produce these tracks in Munich as an initial start for Compost Records. The first release appeared in 1993 and soon after Michael and studio-owner Jan Krause founded their own project called Beanfield.
Beanfield, first single, 1995s “Charles,” earned huge airtime on Gilles Peterson’s BBC radio show and, consequently, in the clubs. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1997, followed by two volumes in a series of remix EPs. Human Patterns followed in 1999 and proved this act’s staying power. They continue to go from strength to strength, earning huge praise from DJs and critics alike.
In the meantime, Compost Records has gone from strength to strength producing a number of superb acts such as Les Gammas, Worldless People, Fauna Flash, Trüby Trio, Beanfield, Procreation, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Minus 8 and Joseph Malik.
Michael Reinboth’s activities opened up a wide range of new
prospects and interactions. In 1998 the link to the Berlin based
Jazzanova crew followed as a logical and natural step, releasing acts
like Victor Davies, The Underwolfs, Classen Collective and Jazzanova.
Michael says: “All the Compost artists know each other. It‘s like a
family! We know each other mostly from talking about music a lot,
changing rare records, visiting second hand shops, and of course from
DJing throughout the years.”
Encouraged by the growing success of all artists and acts including the chart breaking Jazzanova act, Compost Records and JCR have developed into an internationally respected German label family.
